One evening last summer, I glanced out of the kitchen window while making lunch, and saw smoke rising from the far end of the pond. I looked all around and sniffed the air, but couldn't smell anything or see anyone. And the smoke just kept coming.
So I called my neighbour ... the font of all knowledge. "Is there a grass fire at the far end of the pond?" say I. "No", says she. "It's sea smoke." Being from the city I say, as usual, "Huh? What's that?"
Well ... it seems it's not fog. Fog descends like a blanket, but sea smoke is on the move and blows in from the sea. Fascinating!
